During the winter months of December & January, we guide in the Gulf of Texas (out of Castaway Lodge) for waterfowl, hunting the shallow bays and flats of the lower Laguna Madre out of Port Mansfield, TX.
Port Mansfield, Texas Waterfowl Hunts
Captain Matt Raley provides his customers with the most exciting hunting and fishing trips available in the Texas Gulf Coast. Our services include Texas duck and waterfowl hunts, and inner-coastal sea trout and redfish trips. Hunting the shallow bays and flats of the lower Laguna Madre out of Port Mansfield, TX is a hunt that can’t be replicated anywhere else in the country.
We leave right from the doorsteps of the lodge so don’t have to drive anywhere to meet up. Travel to the hunting location will be by 18-foot air boat. Hunts will be conducted in mobile blind sets to stay on top of the birds allowing us to hunt the X on every hunt. Our hunts are half days. If booking a full day duck hunt, and a limit or near-limit is shot, we can use the second half of the day to target redfish and speckled trout. There is great fishing on the inner coastal waters of the Texas coast.
ABOUT YOUR TRIP
Great hunting is abound by the thousands of wintering ducks that use the area. 90% of the the worlds Redheads winter here along with Pintails, Widgeon, Gadwall, Greater and lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Northern Shovelers, Bluewing, Greenwing, and Cinnamon Teal. Along with snow geese and the non-migrating Mottled ducks that are indigenous to the area.
Hunting the Texas coast is a great place to get trophy ducks for the wall. Many species are in full plumbage! Many guests come for trophy redheads and Big Sprig Pintails but this past season have had hunts up to 9 different species harvested. Along with great hunting afternoon fishing trips add to a great experience. Catching trophy redfish just feet away from where we do our duck hunting for the ultimate cast n blast.
LODGING INFORMATION
Lodging and breakfast is part of the hunt package. Located right on the water it is a great place to spend the night and enjoy the nice winter weather (60s-70s many days)! Fish/duck cleaning table located right there along with a chest freezer to store your trophies and game. Take advantage of the free fishing on the lighted pier after dark too. There are several places to grab dinner within walking distance. If you catch fish and want it cooked they will cook it for you. Travel time to the boat landing is just blocks away as well so many times you can just hop in the boat right from the lodging.
TRAVELING TO TEXAS
Airports in either Brownsville or Harlingen Texas work best, but others also use San Antonio or Corpus Christi that are 2.5 and 4 hrs away. The closest airport is Harlingen which is about a 35 minute ride away. There is a Bass Pro Shops in Harlingen, TX where you can pick up any last minute items. Can always ship gear and shells via UPS prior to arrival too.

Hunting the shallow bays and flats of the lower Laguna Madre out of Port Mansfield, TX is a hunt that can’t be replicated anywhere else in the country. The lagoon’s ecosystem is protected by the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Padre Island National Seashore. Hunting the Magnificent Mississippi River is definitely a world class hunting destination that every waterfowl hunter should experience at least once in their hunting career. The great part about the big river is that it holds ducks from opening day through the end of the season. There is great early season teal and wood duck shooting to late season diver and mallard hunting. One of the great things while hunting on the Mississippi River is that we harvest around 20 different waterfowl species a year. You never know what will be cupped and committed next. Many days we shoot 6 or more species a day.
Guided turkey hunts take place in zones 3 and 7. In zone three the hunting location is centered around Stevens Point and in zone 7 around Minocqua. The key for our high success rate in turkey hunting is relentless scouting that we do throughout the spring to make sure we are right where the birds want to be each day. Eastern turkeys are one of the toughest sub-species to pursue and commit to calling this is why scouting is so important. We will put the birds to bed the night before each hunt and know where they are come morning.
